The Off the Grid Sweater


OFF-THE-GRID.  Somewhere on a sandy beach.

Here is how to make your own Off the Grid sweater. Perfect Summer sweater, Beach Cover-up

Material

Yarn: Loop & thread snuggly wuggly

Color: soft lilac

Hook Size: 4 mm hook

Abbreviation

beg = beginning

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

flhdc = front loop half double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

sc = single crochet

sk = skip

sl.st. = slip stitch

sp = space

st(s) = stitch(es)

Instruction

This sweater is worked from the bottom up

Stitch pattern used:

Sequence of construction:

  • Make a ribbing band for the bottom
  • Body of sweater
  • Make 2 sleeves
  • Attach sleeves
  • Work necline ribbing

Bottom ribbing:

Ch15

Row 1: 1 hdc 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each  ch across (14 hdc) ch 1 turn

Row 2 – 88: 1 flhdc in each st (14 hdc), ch1 turn

The band measures 36 inch unstretched

For smaller size make less row, for bigger size make more rows

Turn work 90 degrees, join the last row to the beg foundation row (joining can be done by sewing the 2 ends or sl.st or sc last stitches of last row to stitches of the foundation ch

Body Pattern

Working around band just made

Round 1: ch 1, 1 sc in same st, Ch 3, sk 1 hdc, 1 sc in next st, ch 13, sk 3 hdc, 1sc in next st.

continue alternating between loop of 13 ch and loop of 3 ch with 1 sc in between the loops until you have 22 loops of 13 ch and 22 loops of 3 ch, ending with a ch 13, slst to beg. sc.

Hint: The exact location of the loops is not that important as long as there are evenly distributed around the band

Make less loops for a smaller size and more loops for a bigger size. Making sure there is an equal number of 13 ch  and 3 ch loops. And it should be an even number  of loops. 

Round 2: slst in 1st ch of 3 ch loop, 1sc in same loop, *in next ch 13 loop (1 dc in each of  6 ch, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch, ch 3, 1 dc in next 6 ch), 1 sc in next ch 3 loop, repeat from * around, after working the last ch 13 loops, sl.st to beg sc

Round 3: slst in next 6 dc, slst in 1st ch of ch 3, 1 sc in that same ch 3 sp, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch 3 sp, ch 13, *sk to next ch 3 space, 1 sc in that space, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch3 space, ch 13, repeat from * around, sl.st to beg sc

Repeat row 2-3 eight times.

Do not fasten off

use another ball of yarn for the sleeves

Sleeve Pattern

Make 2 

ribbing:

Ch 15

work 19 rows as bottom ribbing

Sleeve:

Row 1-  ch 1, 1 sc in same st, *ch 3,  sk 1 hdc, 1 sc in next, ch 13,  sk 1 hdc, 1 sc in next, repeat * around (6 ch 13 loops and 6 ch 3 loops, end with sl st to 1 st sc

Row 2-3 as Row 2-3 of body pattern

repeat row 2-3 eight time as body pattern

Repeat Row 2 once more to the last 13 ch loop

Attaching sleeve to body

Put a marker on each corner grid of the body (making sure you have the same number of grids in the front and back)

In last 13 ch loop of sleeve make 1 dc in each 6 ch, sl st to corresponding dc ( before ch 3 loop) of body, sl st to  next ch of ch 3 loop of body, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch of sleeve, ch 1, sl,st to 3rd ch of next ch 3 loop of body, sl st to next dc of body, 1 dc in next 6 ch of sleeve, sl st to 1 st sc of sleeve. Fasten off

Neckline 

From where you left off on body

Start working as row 3 to last (ch 3, 1 sc, ch 3) before sleeve-body join , 1 sc in ch 3 sp, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch 3 sp, sk sleeve body join, on sleeve work 1 sc in ch 3 sp, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch 3 sp, continue working on sleeve as row 3 of pattern, join back to body as previous, continue working the body as row 3, join next sleeve as first sleeve, continue working on body as row 3

work 2 more rows (as row 2-3 of body pattern)

Do not fasten off

Make Neckline Ribbing 

Ch 9, work 86 rows of ribbing pattern as of the body.

join width together to form a yoke for the sweater

From where you left off on body, slst to 1st ch of ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 6 ch of ch 13 loop, 1 sc to yoke, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch of ch 13 loop, ch 2, 1 sc in nest st of yoke, 1 dc in next 6 ch of ch 13 loop, *1 sc in next ch 3 sp, 1 dc in each of next 6 ch of  ch 13 loop, from last join on yoke sk 3 sts , 1 sc on yoke, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch of ch 13 loop, ch 2, 1 sc in next st of yoke, 1 dc in next 6 ch of ch 13 loop, repeat from * around. end with slst to beg sc.

there will be 26 attachment points between the yoke and neckline.

Fasten off.
